AFL preview: Round 16

IT’S another blockbuster round of footy in the AFL and we’ve got you covered with our best bets from Round 16.

Hawthorn v GWS

Both sides head to Tasmania feeling pretty good about themselves right now.

Hawthorn produced a stunning upset over the Pies while GWS remain top of the competition despite their dramatic draw with the Cats last weekend.

The Hawks have won two straight and have managed to rack up an average 107 points in this winning streak. The Giants are the third highest-scoring side in the competition averaging over 101 points per game.

We can see this one being a very open affair with plenty of inside 50s at both ends of the field.

Prediction: Over 181.5 @ $1.87

Carlton v Melbourne

Melbourne find themselves embedded in the top eight and could get inspirational forward Jesse Hogan back for this weekend’s clash. However, the Demons’ explosive midfield is ravaged by injury with Jack Watts, Jack Viney, Nathan Jones and Christian Salem all out.

Carlton pushed competition heavyweights Adelaide all the way last weekend and in last month they recorded wins over ladder-leaders GWS and Gold Coast away. This one could very well be a tight affair but Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs could dominate the midfield contest against a depleted Demons outfit and for that reason we give the edge to the Blues.

Prediction: Carlton +7.5 @ $1.90

Collingwood v Essendon

The Pies look destined to miss the finals for the fourth successive season and they are also facing four straight losses for the first time in two years.

The Bombers blew the un-losable game against the Swans two weeks ago and they managed to collapse once again in a loss to the lowly Lions last weekend.

This one will be a clash of two desperate sides but Joe Daniher is the X-Factor that can blow this game wide open like he did on Anzac Day and we can’t go past them as the race for the top eight heats up.

Prediction: Essendon @ $1.80

St Kilda v Richmond

Both these sides are coming off impressive victories with St Kilda looking to cling to a top eight finish while the Tigers eye an all-important top four finish.

When the Saints are on they’re very good and can score at will but they’re vulnerable on the counter and the Tigers are very effective in turning defence into attack.

Alex Rance, Toby Nankervis, Trent Cotchin and of course Dustin Martin are at the top of their games and if this quartet fires they should be too much for the young Saints.

Prediction: Richmond -7.5 @ $1.90
