College basketball: Maryland @ Syracuse

OUR incredible college streak came to an end after Temple couldn’t hold on to a double-digit lead in the second half.

Now it’s on to starting fresh and we have a great lean on undefeated Syracuse continuing their dominance against Maryland.

Both teams have started as expected this year and it’s not surprising to see Maryland at 6-1 or Syracuse at 5-0.

Neither one of them however has been able to consistently cover the line, although Maryland’s loss to St Bonaventure as 10.5 point favourites does certainly stand out on their record.

While credit should be given to the Terrapins for bouncing back with a convincing win over New Mexico the team hasn’t fared particularly well against the top teams in years gone by.

Maryland has covered the line just once in their last eight games against teams with a winning record, and are 0-4 against the spread in their last four meetings against the ACC.

It’s been much of the same from Jim Boheim’s Cuse outfit, who are getting it done on defence once more as their 1-3-1 zone causes all sorts of problems for opposing teams.

The Orange currently allow just 57.6 points per game and are holding teams to 33.9% shooting from the field.

This game could well come down to production off the bench, which includes the defensive efforts of the second unit.

Cuse own one of the most productive benches in the nation at the moment, with the reserves allowing just 8.4 points per game!

Maryland also boast a top tier defence at this moment in time, ranking 21st in the nation and allowing just 60 points per game. That includes impressive outings against Butler and New Mexico.

It does need to be pointed out that Orange star Tyus Battle could yet be ruled out of this one, and we’ll keep a close on eye on his inclusion as to whether we go ahead with this one.
