Europa League Preview: Matchday 5

The Europa League resumes with some cracking matches and as usual we’ve highlighted the best value. Here’s our top picks for Matchday 5.

Zenit St. Petersburg v FK Vardar

Zenit has all but qualified for the next round however they will be eyeing off top spot and need to ensure there is no slip up at home to strugglers FK Vardar. The Russian giants have been an attacking juggernaut in this year’s competition scoring 11 goals from their four games including a 5-0 drubbing of Vardar in the reverse fixture.

The Macedonian outfit have really done it tough in this group, losing all four of their matches and conceding a whopping 17 goals in the process. Vardar are clearly out of their depth and a trip to Russia could see things go from very bad to much worse in a hurry.

Zenit will take care of business and in an easy fashion.

Prediction: Over 3.5 goals @ $1.75

AEK Athens v Rijeka

Undefeated in the competition this season, AEK Athens have proven to be an extremely stubborn outfit who can certainly execute a game plan to perfection, just ask AC Milan. The Greek club can take a huge step towards qualification for the next stage with a win at home over inconsistent Croatian side Rijeka.

AEK were clearly the better side in the reverse fixture and deservedly emerged with the three points courtesy of a 2-1 win at the Stadion Rujevica. Now, after holding European heavyweights AC Milan scoreless over the course of 180 minutes, AEK should feel pretty confident of getting the job done against Rijeka who have lost three of their four matches in the competition and given up 10 goals in the process. In-fact, Rijeka have managed just one win from their past six matches in all competitions.

Back the home side to get the job done in front of what should be a very parochial crowd.

Prediction: AEK Athens @ $1.75
