A League Preview: Round 5

The action in the A League continues this weekend and as usual we’ve highlighted the best value on offer. Here’s our top picks for Round 5.

Melbourne City v Sydney FC

Melbourne City are just the third team in A League history to open the season with four straight victories. Not many would have predicted their blistering start given the long-term injury to talisman Bruno Fornaroli. However, City seem to have really taken to new coach Warren Joyce’s philosophy and really made use of their speed out wide through Bruce Kamau and Scott Jamieson.

Sydney FC continue to amaze football fans in Australia with their supreme ability to avoid defeat. The champions are undefeated in their last 13 A League matches and will next week contest their second consecutive FFA Cup final. Graham Arnold’s side cruised to victory over Perth last Friday and their star men in Milos Ninkovic, Adrian Mierzejewski and Bobo are all in great form.

Sydney FC really enjoy playing against City right now having racked up three convincing victories from their past three meetings and they’re a very strong chance of making it four.

Prediction: Sydney FC @ $2.20

Newcastle v Wellington

It’s been a time since we’ve seen a very competitive team in the Hunter but their two wins and two draws start to the season would suggest that this is their best side since they clinched the title back in 2007. Ernie Merrick has really instilled a greater belief on the defensive end whilst new signing Roy O’Donovan gives them a fantastic outlet up front.

Wellington are the only team in the competition that hasn’t registered at least one away point this season. Yet to register a win this season, Wellington have shown glimpses of class but they are leaking goals at will right now. Only the Mariners and the bottom-placed Brisbane have conceded more goals and there 3-goal capitulation at home to the Roar last week has to be at the back of the players’ minds.

The Jets are the highest-scoring team in the competition and possess the competition’s leading goalscorer in O’Donovan who will relish going at this shaky Phoenix defence. Back the home side.

Prediction: Newcastle @ 2.00
