A League Preview: Round 8

The FFA Cup is done and dusted for another season as all eyes now turn to the league as clubs jockey for position heading into the busy Christmas period. Here’s our best picks for Round 8.

Melbourne City v Perth

Just when it looked like the Glory were starting to gather momentum at home they go and get properly touched up by the previously winless Melbourne Victory. Kenny Lowe’s side now must head back east with what can only be described as a terrible road record of one point from their past five away matches. Their dismal away record is largely due to their poor defensive setup. Perth concede close to three goals a game on the road this season.

City, after starting the season on fire, have really struggled of late. They’ve taken one point from their last three matches which has seen them tumble from first on the ladder to third. A win at home would seem a must for City and they’ll likely commit more men forward in order to do so.

This matchup has racked up more goals than any other in recent times. Quite incredibly, there have been four or more goals in seven of the past nine meetings and a whopping 41 goals during that span. The equation here is simple, back the overs.

Prediction: Over 3.5 goals @ $2.35

Wellington v Central Coast

The Phoenix have struggled big time on the road this season but they are unbeaten at home and are coming off a very impressive 5-2 victory over Perth. Wellington should be fresh and ready to roll this weekend after enjoying a week off last weekend and that will do wonders for their All White representatives who had to travel to Peru last week.

On paper the Phoenix face an extremely favourable opponent (the Mariners) to make it two wins on the trot. Central Coast suffered lost both their games in Wellington last season and Paul Okon’s young side are winless from their past seven away matches in the A League. To make matters worse, they’ve been held scoreless five time from their past 12 away matches.

We’re heavily leaning on the stats in this one and are confident the well-rested home team will rack up win number two for the season.

Prediction: Wellington @ $1.95
