Australian Open Challenge: Day 1

WITH the Australian Open kicking off we’re going to have a little fun with this year’s tournament.

Much like our $1,000 challenges in the past we’re going to start with $10 and see if we can flip it a thousand by the end of the tournament.

With Day 1 providing a host of action we’ll single out our best plays (all a minimum of $1.50 legs) and either stake on a single leg or multi depending on our leans.

So, let’s get to it.

Our first play will be a nice little two-leg multi on American no. 8 seed Jack Sock and the no. 24 seed Gilles Muller.

Sock finished last year in style and showed exactly why he’ll be a top 10 player on tour this year.

His opponent, Yuchi Sugita, is 3-7 in his last 10 games and one of those ‘wins’ was against an injured Sock last week. The American was forced to retire after dropping the first set but there’s absolutely nothing to read into in that result.

Expect the American to overpower his opposite in this one as he prepares for a deep run in Melbourne.

Muller will kick off his campaign against Argentine Federico Delbonis. The clay courter has lost both his match sin preparation for this tournament, going down to qualifier Michael Mmoh in Brisbane and losing in a qualifier to Wild Card Alexei Papyri in Sydney.

We don’t see Muller encountering too much trouble here and feel he’s a near lock to help boost our odds.

Tip: Multi: Jack Sock/Gilles Muller

Stake: $10
Potential return: $17.40
