The action in the A League continues this weekend and as usual we’ve highlighted the best value on offer. Here’s our top picks for Round 9.
Newcastle v Melbourne City
Melbourne City travel to Newcastle to take on a red hot Jets outfit. Warren Joyce’s side is in turmoil right now. They are without a win in their past four matches, they recently sacked assistant coach Michael Valkanis amid claims he clashed with Joyce and they will be without the services of arguably their best defender in Osama Malik who is suspended.
The Jets on the other hand are flying. Ernie Merrick’s side have won three of their past four matches and own the best attacking record (20 goals) and second best defensive record (nine goals conceded) in the league. Recruits boys Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Dimi Petratos, Daniel Georgievski, and Roy O’Donovan couldn’t have made a better start for their new club.
City’s strength in the opening eight games has been their defence but coming up against the hottest attacking side in the league without their best defender will prove too much for them to overcome. Back the hot home side.
Prediction: Newcastle @ $2.50
Central Coast v Perth
The Mariners have been very solid at home but their record away was a real concern, that was until last week. Paul Okon’s side were nothing short of tremendous against Wellington across the ditch and they thoroughly deserved their 4-1 victory. The Mariners are enjoying their best run in years, sustaining just one loss from their past five outings and they remain the only team to defeat Sydney FC in the best part of 10 months.
Perth continue to be a model of inconsistency. The men from the west have lost three of their past five matches and despite earning a rare away win last week, their defence continues to leak goals.
The Mariners’ star recruits Daniel De Silva and Andrew Hoole have been nothing but superb of late and they’ll once again look to pull the strings in midfield and against the league’s second worst defence, they should have a field day.
Prediction: Central Coast @ $2.05
